Youth Hero
After being the Youth Chair for the Arthritis Walk a few years ago, it is a pleasure to be this year’s Jingle Bell Run/Walk Honoree. I have had arthritis for as long as I can remember. Growing up with arthritis has made me look at life at a different angle than most teenagers. Taking different medicines, seeing the doctor several times a year and going to PT just seems like a way of life. I have never let the pain stop me from playing sports and hanging out with my friends. Hopefully educating people about arthritis will make them understand that we are not that different from them. Don’t let the pain of arthritis stop you from doing what you like to do.

Adult Hero
I am 38 years old and was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at the age of 2. If I had to use one word to describe myself it would be…determined. It all started in my knees and I had to wear full leg casts from my hips down to my feet for six months or longer. Naturally, I forgot how to walk so I had to stay at the Children’s Seashore House in Brigantine NJ to learn how to walk all over again. I guess that is when you can say the determination started to set in. Growing up, I wanted to be like all the other kids. I wanted to run, play ball, ride a bike and build a tree fort. I did them all. I was determined to not let Arthritis get in my way. Now as an adult I face different challenges, such as driving a car, managing a house, working a full time job and even marriage. I was also determined to conquer the normal activities of everyday life and I did and I still do. As my life goes on I am sure I will face new obstacles, but with my determination I will persevere. I am truly honored to be chosen to be this year’s Adult Honoree. I hope my story will inspire anyone living with arthritis that with determination anything is possible.
